Introduction
This document is the list of frequently asked questions for the R-lang mailing list. It contains basic information about the list, and answers to frequently asked questions about the use of R for analysis and modeling of language data.
What is the list?
What is the mission of the R-lang list?
The R-lang list has three main goals:
- as a place to share know-how about R and practical tricks and tips on how to deal with issues specific to language data in R.
- as a locus for discussions and advice about statistical techniques applied to language data in general -- both experts giving advice to beginners on basic questions, and experts interacting with other experts regarding more advanced issues.
- as a way of spreading awareness and interest in probabilistic/statistical approaches to linguistics and related disciplines, and more advanced methods among those who are already using statistics.
How does this list differ from the CorpLingWithR mailing list run by Stefan Th. Gries?
The R-lang list has a different focus from the CorpLing with R list. While the former is aiming more at loading & searching corpora with regular expressions & performing statistical/graphical analyses of corpus data, R-lang is focused more generally on statistical issues in language data modeling and analysis, and technical issues involving how to do modeling and analysis in R. The two lists overlap somewhat but have different foci. .
